Interviewer : "You have this little black child who’s gonna grow up in this world.." (x)
no, no, no, see - this isn’t funny. at all. Yes, your baby is Black, and yes, you are white. It is not okay when white parents who transracially adopt think it’s best to “ignore” race or be colorblind. While there is no one way, or even really wrong or right way to raise someone “as Black”, you cannot pretend his skin is not a part of him, culturally or otherwise. It’s important to make sure he knows that he is loved, and that he gets representation of people who look like him, too, while growing up. Ugh, this is why we side-eye white celebrities who adopt non-white babies.
What’s worse is she said this sarcastically to a Black man who was asking a sincere question about if her worldview as a White woman has changed since she adopted her son. She never answers that question. And then she goes on to talk about how naturally athletic and musical he is. And what was that about them building him a jungle-themed playroom on the set of Gravity?! She’s fucking clueless.
He asked her a serious question and she made it a joke. Sounds about right.
White people with children of color. Even when they try there’s that damn distorted lens in their eye. How can she teach him to be proud of his race if she can’t even see it?
Ah this whole discussion above. I get so much shit from my non black friends when I talk about this… They all think being color blind is some kind of amazingly cool thing and at the end of the day nobody wants to answer my question about what happens when that black child who is never told he is black and never understands that this world is different for him because of his skin color, grows up and is presumed guilty and dangerous by ppl who look like his mother. Who helps him understand that or teach him how to interact with police so he isn’t shot or beaten when he is pulled over in his luxury car mommy bought him in the ritzy neighborhood he’s lived in all his life? Being colorblind won’t do that for him.Source: sandrabbullock
